Awards of our 2024 Signature Show

at the Wetlands till July 28th.

Our 2024 Signature Show submissions are currently exhibiting from Jun 2nd to July 28th at the Wetland Park Visitor Center, Las Vegas. If you haven't seen it, don't miss it. There is wonderful award winning artwork by our talented members.

The Awards have been announced and prizes received on the 16th June. Congratulations to each of the deserving, talented winners!!

Thank you so much to Carl Purcell, who was the Juror for this Show. He said:

"It was an honor to jury your show. I was impressed with the overall quality of the show. It is always rewarding to see artists trying challenging new subject matter. When I jury a show I look for three major qualities:

    • Command in the handling of the medium. Watercolor is not easy.
    • Composition. The arrangement of the shapes and values in the chosen space or format is crucial. Subjects will not carry a poor design, but strong design can elevate a humble subject.
    • Personal involvement. Does the painting reflect the artist's passion or exhibit a personal vision of the subject?

It was difficult to choose the awards because there were a number of paintings that came up to the same level of excellence. If you did not receive an award, don't give up. Study good paintings, determine to lift the quality of your work each year. Our goal should always be to exceed what we are doing today."

Congratulations to all our winners who were:

Best In Show - Linda Smith "Gypsy Blue"

First Place - Doni Murphy "Calico Basin"

Second Place - Pam Lopez "Home Brewing"

Third Place - Cara Lee "Just a Moment"

    Honorable Mentions:

    Sharon Menary "Meredith Rose"

Juan de Dios Varela "A Kiss Under The Storm"

    Paulette Baker "Steep Terrain"

There are more than 20 beautiful works submitted and hanging in the Wetland Visitor Center. Don't miss this if you are an art enthusiast.

Carl kindly recorded our Zoom Workshop and has made it available to our members with this link. Click to watch it.

Carl's NVWS Zoom Workshop link - "Drawing With Your Artist Brain"

    Workshop Description:

There have been many requests for a drawing workshop to supplement your watercolor work. Join Carl Purcell in this free drawing workshop!   Carl taught painting and drawing for thirty years at Snow College in central Utah and developed the drawing program that is presently being used in the college’s art department. You can view Carl’s paintings and drawings at: www.carlpurcellart.com

Check out Carl’s book, “Drawing with Your Artists Brain” for more information regarding his teaching methods.

    Email: lsmith.lv@outlook.com or call: 509-499-1156

    A word from Carl…

I am going to treat this workshop as a drawing for painter’s workshop. The first part will be in seeing shapes and how to assess them correctly, and the second part will be about doing drawings with paintings in mind-planning the arrangement of shapes in a format.

With that in mind here is a list of materials that you will need (Click to Download Pdf):

    • HB and 4B drawing pencils (quality of graphite varies from manufacturer to manufacturer. I have found Mars Lumigraph to be excellent.
    • Sketchbook 9 X 12. Smooth surface
    • Kneaded eraser
    • 4 X 5 rectangle of mat board or very stiff poster paper.

    Don't miss this!

    Wendy Kay

    Presented "Procreate on the iPad

Click on the link or on the image to watch the video.

    Wendy says:

I grew up in the northeast, in the gorgeous green mountains of Vermont. I doodled like any kid, but my interest in visual art really started after I saw Mary Poppins jump inside that chalk drawing on the sidewalk. Playing inside of a drawing seemed perfectly logical to me at the time and of course you can dance with animated penguins!

Although I enjoyed drawing and painting, I did not know that it could be a career. Luckily, when I was in college I volunteered at a computer science conference and saw the very beginning of 3D computer animation. The highlight of that show was a single frame of a computer-generated chrome sphere. That was all. One picture that had taken the computer all year to render. It was the coolest thing I’d ever seen and I thought if artists could work with the programmers we might be able to create something interesting together. That is exactly what happened and my career in 3D computer animation began.

I worked with many animation studios in Los Angeles, but my favorite projects were created when working with Dreamworks Feature Animation. I also enjoyed working as a trainer with Apple for eight years.

And, what started out as a side hobby, sewing, turned into another visual arts career. When I went to Joann’s to replace my broken sewing machine I saw a machine stitching a flower all by itself. What was this magic?! Long story short… I took a deep dive into computerized sewing machines and embroidery digitizing software and ended up working with Singer/Husqvarna-Viking/Pfaff as an embroidery specialist.

Retired now, I have the time to rekindle my traditional drawing and painting skills which is why I joined the NVWS. But, as always, I’m all about embracing new technology and I love combining traditional and digital, 2D and 3D, paint and stitches and I’m happy to share what I know.

I am currently working on my surface pattern design portfolio because I’d love to see my designs on fabric, dishware and home decor products. Let playtime begin!

Logo Design for Art Guilds of Nevada

The Las Vegas Artists Associations and other Art Non-Profits are initiating a collaboration and have been meeting for a while to encourage this to be a reality.

City Lights have taken the lead in having a Logo Competition in order to work under a cohesive logo as a group representation. The following is a letter which is a Call for Logo Designs and where they should be submitted. If you would like to take part in this Logo Design Competition the details are as follows from an email we received from City Lights:

"City Lights Art Gallery has been working on a joint effort in networking and collaboration with the following non-profit galleries in town to see if we can create some art events specifically geared towards our membership.

    • Clark County Artists Guild
    • Las Vegas Artists Guild
    • Nevada Clay Guild
    • Nevada Camera Club
    • NV Watercolor Society

We originally reached out to 10 local non-profits, but these are the organizations who have continually participated and attended our network meetings.

In order to reach out to venues, we are creating an umbrella name for our united non-profits that the leadership of all of our organizations have agreed upon as the name of Art Guilds of NV with (United Non-profits) under our name

We are looking for a logo design to represent us. Entries can be emailed via a jpeg or png image to clag.president@gmail.com.

Deadline to submit entries: March 31st at midnight.

We will be voting on the one we like best at our next meeting.

    Sincerely,
Kristi Watson, President, City Lights Art Gallery

Pam Lopez, Becca Youngblood, Leslie Nielsen and Laurie Ponte

    Presented "More About Urban Sketchers"

Click on the link or on the image to watch the video.

    Pam Lopez Art

"I retired after a teaching career that spanned fifty years and took me to many places like Kenya, Canada, Brazil, Grenada, Malaysia, Portugal and finally Las Vegas.

I then decided to go back to what I loved doing best - painting. I was a batik artist for many years but I wasn’t happy working with the fumes of hot wax within a closed environment in my Las Vegas home. So I challenged myself to try watercolors as I’d always heard that it is a difficult medium to work with. It is. It was a huge learning curve, and it still is, but when that perfect combination of water mingling with pigment creates that luminous transparent quality on my paper, I’m in heaven!

Keeping a sketchbook to experiment and play is an important learning path for me. When I stumbled upon the UrbanSketchersLV site on Facebook, it was what I needed. I met a lot of like minded people who were at my level or way beyond. Chatting, exchanging ideas, looking over their shoulders and feeling good about being outdoors makes my soul feel good!

I’m on a never ending journey of learning and growing, and I’m happy!"

    Becca Youngblood Art

    Leslie Nielsen Art

    Laurie Ponte Art

    Laurie says:

I started taking watercolor classes with Judy Hoiness back in the 90's at the local community college in Bend. This led to lessons with Sandra Holtzman, Helen Brown and Cindy Briggs. These talented artists/instructors really sparked my interest in watercolor.  With more time on my hands when I retired in 2020, expressing myself on paper with paint became a passion. I am a member of an active local nonprofit called Sagebrushers Art Society in Bend, OR - that provides a studio and gallery for its members to paint anytime and to display their art. A longtime friend of mine and I have enjoyed 'art dates' visiting Bend's numerous galleries as their displays change monthly.

Since retirement my husband and I have traveled to several states to rock climb and mountain bike in our van. Our favorite place - where we found ourselves returning every spring and fall - was Red Rock Canyon. Besides being an incredibly beautiful place to hangout and paint, there's a good reason it's known as an international climbing destination - and, mountain biking here is some of the best we've found in the country. Also, the local lap swim pools are top notch and very affordable. Wanting to be here for more than brief parts of the year, we moved to Las Vegas in October, 2023.

Since then I've  discovered even more to like about the area - including the Nevada Watercolor Society. I've enjoyed getting to know its welcoming members and appreciate their camaraderie. So many have vast experience and are willing to share it with me. Thanks, NWS!
